Dodge Challenger

So it’s not as quick as the Ford Mustang; so it’s not as sleek as the Chevrolet Camaro. Who cares – it’s American muscle, so what’s not to love? Here’s an ovation to ’70s retro, and to the Dodge Challenger.

The Dodge Challenger debuted in 1970 as the twin of the renowned Plymouth Barracuda. It was the epitome of the pony car aesthetic: long hood, short rear deck, blunt-nosed grill and aggressive hood scoops. Owners could choose from an astonishing cornucopia of options, colors, trims, fobs, and nine engines, the most famous of which was the 426-hp Hemi. In its first year, 84,032 Challengers were sold. The second year, due to loss of interest in muscle cars and increased emission regulations, only 29,883 Challengers were produced. 2011 Dodge Durango CitadelChrysler has gone through difficult times in the last few years and is now busily rebuilding with a slew of nicely upgraded 2011 products and some very good all-new ones. Among the latter is this new 2011 Dodge Durango SUV-a three-row, unibody, rear-drive platform – with little but its name in common with its truck-based SUV predecessor.

Dodge design chief Mark Trostle says its handsome new body was shaped by the same “passionate” designers who did the muscular 2011 Charger. “It’s all about proportions,” he asserts, and its purposeful but pleasing proportions begin with a 10-inch-longer body on a five-in. longer wheelbase vs. the Grand Cherokee’s.

This new Durango’s spacious cabin offers premium soft-touch materials front-to-rear regardless of trim level. Interior design chief Klaus Busse calls it “friendly all the way back to the third row, with nice, soft edges throughout.” An interactive Electronic Vehicle Information Center (EVIC) provides a variety of useful information, and the new instrument panel offers a choice of monotone or two-tone trim with dark upper and lighter lower colors. At the same time that car manufactures are supporting vehicle electrification and the development of bio-fuels, few seem intent on turning away from delivering cars high on performance even if that power comes at the expense of fuel efficiency.

Raw Power

Detroit’s three automakers are pursuing fuel efficiency in a major way. General Motors has its electrified Chevrolet Volt, the Ford Motor Company offers its electric Transit Connect and will soon have a battery electric Focus and Chrysler is pursuing a new form of hybridization in cooperation with the Environmental Protection Agency.
